I N T H E C LAS S R O O M Pillars Assemblies bring the school together N ew for school year 2017-18 are the Pillar Assemblies at the Upper School. Led by history teachers Eric Marston ’91 and Mike Nelson, these assemblies are themed around the Thornton Academy pillars of respect, responsibility, investment, and compassion. These pillars promote character and provide a foundation on which students grow and thrive. and out of the classroom, cheers on the student of the month, and ends by singing the alma mater together. Once a month, the Thornton Academy community recognizes student accomplishments both in Marston and Nelson set up the assemblies to bring the school together, celebrate the successes of Students have been recognized for a wide variety of talents and skills this year, including a championship in darts, step dance, and robotics, to name just a few. Without these assemblies, these students may not otherwise receive recognition. the students, as well as more deeply honor the students of the month. “The Pillar Assemblies bring a closeness and a sense of pride. We are a school of 1500 kids and to celebrate each other’s accomplishments, together, in a fun and different format brings us closer together as a community. I have also heard kids say that they look forward to going to the assemblies. It's different than what they are used to and I think they like that,” Nelson said.
