R Help organize a club Year-long celebration planned The Thornton Academy Bicentennial Steering Committee would like to announce the FOUR ANCHOR EVENTS of the 2011 Bicentennial. 1. Opening Celebration Set for February 2011 February 12, 2011, will officially kick off the Bicentennial year, celebrating the 200th anniversary of Thornton’s founding in Feb. 1811. As befitting a winter founding, the Opening Committee is planning many winter-oriented outdoor activities­ Maine weather cooperat— ing—such as ice skating, sledding, snowshoeing and sleigh riding. Indoors will be displays, ceremonies, videos, singing, food courts, and more. As evening approaches, the campus should be awash in lights— from spotlights to window displays to luminaries throughout campus. If plans work out, a bonfire will end the day along with fireworks. Hail to Thee, Our Alma Mater! 2. TA Community Summer Celebration 3. Homecoming A cross between a country fair and a block party, this 2011 event plans to have something for everyone—games and entertainment for all age groups in Thornton’s sending communities with an emphasis on celebrating Thornton’s place in area history. Co-chairs Vangel Cotsis ’85 and Todd Davis ’81 are in the process of recruiting committee members to begin nailing down the summer 2011 date and details. or sport reunion. Closing Ceremonies The last two anchor events will take place in Fall 2011 and December 2011, and committees for these events will not begin until the Fall of 2010. Steering Committee plans for Homecoming involve class, club and sport reunions with expanded activities running all the week before.
