“Thornton is a major asset of the
community, so investing in TA to
help Saco as a whole makes sense to
me. This project is the next major
step in a very well-thought-out and
executed plan that has included new
classrooms, dorms to accommodate
international students, and a new
STEM center. I am very confident in
the future of this institution and its
long-term positive influence on my
old hometown.” - Roger Miles '65
Paul Sullivan '33 was born on Common
Street in Saco in 1914. He started golfi ng
at age 12 when he worked as a caddie at
Biddeford-Saco Country Club. Back then,
caddies carried buckets of sand on the course,
and built little mounds of sand for teeing off
(rather than the wooden tees of today). Paul
enjoyed a lifelong love for the game of golf,
and made friendships on the course that
lasted many years.
All of Paul's six children are Th ornton
graduates: Kevin '68, Paula '72, Julie '74,
Michael '75, Elaine '78 and Jane '80.
When Paul died in 1997, his children
established the Th ornton Academy Paul
Sullivan Golf Enrichment Fund. Th e fund
has provided various benefi ts for Th ornton
Academy's golf team over the years.
Most recently, the fund donated nearly
$10,000 to help with the purchase of a golf
simulator, which will be located in the new
fi eld house.
Th e Sullivan family is proud to help Th ornton
Academy in memory of their father, Paul.
