The Thornton Academy Athletic Boosters
Booster Highlight
Jim McKenney '48 joined the Boosters
when his kids were at TA and never
left . He is oft en recognized as one
of the hardest workers in the booster
organization.
McKenney served as the Concession
Manager for nine years and was in
charge of purchasing the food for all
of the events at both concession stands
and knowing how much food to prepare
for each event. He also was in charge of
purchasing and maintaining equipment
used for the concessions.
Th is fall, Jim will be recognized by the
entire Th ornton Academy community at
the Homecoming game on October 20 th
where he will receive the Unsung Hero
Award, given annually to a member
of the community who goes above and
beyond the normal call of duty. Th ank
you for your service, Jim!
Th ornton Academy has consistently
remained at the top of athletic
successes in York County and the
State of Maine. Th e success of the
programs would not be where it
is today without the dedication
and support from the volunteers
of the Th ornton Academy Athletic
Boosters.
"Th e purpose of the boosters is to
provide funds and support to all
TA sanctioned athletic programs.
Twice a year (spring and fall) all
coaches are invited to make a
'wish list' request to the boosters
for something that they may need
or want that is not in the current
athletic budget. Last year alone, the
Boosters approved wish list items
totaling $16,000," current Booster
President Stephanie McCollum
says.
Booster volunteers assist in running
the concession stands in the gym,
at Hill Stadium and complete tasks
which may include anything from
cooking hamburgers and hot dogs
to making popcorn or selling 50/50
raffl e tickets at football games.
In addition to supporting athletes
on the fi eld, the Boosters also award
annual scholarships to graduating
seniors. Th e annual Jeddy Newman
Memorial Scholar/Athlete Award
and Outstanding Senior Athlete
Scholarships, totaling close to
$5,000 and are awarded to one male
and one female each year.
Th e Th ornton Academy Athletic
Boosters are proud to support
the Th ornton Academy Athletic
Complex Capital Campaign and
have pledged $25,000 in making
this dream become a reality for
students.
