Alfred Kennedy ’47
Alfred Kennedy ’47 (right) and his brother David Kennedy ’53 loved
attending baseball games. “Alfred Kennedy was an avid Red Sox fan
and loyal supporter of Thornton Academy. Even though living on the
west coast, he never lost his love for Maine and Thornton Academy.
Annual visits and the Alumni Luncheon were highlights each year for
him,” wrote David.
Alfred Kennedy ’47 passed away on January 12, 2016 in
Stockton, California. Al was well respected by his classmates
and played football and basketball at Thornton Academy. He
also served in the Merchant Marines. After graduation, Al
worked at the Saco-Lowell shops, one of the largest textile
machine manufactures in the United States at that time. When
the Saco-Lowell shops closed, Al and his younger brother
David ’53 found themselves out west looking for work. It
didn’t take long before they settled in California where Al met
his wife, Lois. They were married for 57 years and raised three
sons and a daughter. The majority of Al’s career was spent
working for an aircraft company.
Despite living 3,000 miles away, Thornton Academy was
never far from Al’s heart. He frequently attended his reunions
and kept up to date with campus happenings, especially by
watching Thornton football games on his computer. Al was
a loyal and consistent donor of Thornton’s Annual Fund
for more than 25 years. In Al’s final years he volunteered at
the First Presbyterian Church and the Valley Presbyterian
Hospital of Granada Hills. He will forever be remembered by
his classmates and appreciated by the Thornton community
for his support.
