This summer, the General Manager of the New York Giants announced at a press conference that the team had changed its strength and conditioning program, as well as its weight room, to address the impact of injuries on team performance. According to Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News,“ The Giants have led the NFL for three straight seasons in the dubious category of Adjusted Games Lost, a stat kept by FootballOutsiders. com measuring cost of injuries in terms of missed games and games in which players are unable to play to their full potential. They owned the three highest totals in the website’ s database since the year 2000.”

Boys Tennis Team Serves Up State Championship

BY EMMA DEANS
Thornton Academy claimed its first State title in boys tennis with a 5-0 victory over Lewiston in June 2016. For the second year in a row they accomplished an undefeated regular season, and captured the SMAA 2016 Class A South title by avenging their 2015 loss to Falmouth. Head Coach Mr. Andy Carlson said,“ It was a big accomplishment for the program … a lot of small things had to come together for this to result. It was a long journey that was really the culmination of all the players who were part of the program over the last 15 years or so.”
Dariy Vykhodtsev’ 19 finished second in the MPA Singles Tournament, which is the highest finish for any TA tennis player— male or female— in the school’ s history. Dylan
Gooch’ 16 and Jared Waterhouse’ 16 won the SMAA Doubles Tournament— only the second TA Boys team to achieve such a feat.“ The program never would have been able to reach this accomplishment without the guidance and contributions of assistant coaches Chris Kohl and William Gooch. Both of these guys over the years have put their heart and soul into the program— into teaching not only the game, but a love for the game of tennis,” Mr. Carlson said. In addition to the team’ s overall hard work ethic, Mr. Carlson pointed to the strong connections made between local and boarding students. Athletes“ from various locations around the world are coming together on the TA campus to grow as individuals while working towards a collective goal,” he said.
