Maine Distinctions
Bailey Tremblay ’15 Named
Miss Maine Softball
At the Senior East-West all-star games at Cony High School in
June, Bailey Tremblay ’15 was named Miss Maine Softball—the
state’s most prestigious individual softball award. Bailey played
every inning of every game during her career at Thornton Academy
and became a pitcher in her sophomore year. She went 46-10 with
a 2.20 ERA and 386 strikeouts in 370 innings. She batted .461 for
her career with a school record 102 hits. Bailey led the Trojans to a
Western Class A Championship as a junior and the team finished
as Runners-up for the Western Class A title this past season. She
has enlisted with the military and is spending a year in training
before taking classes and playing softball at the University of New
England. Since its inception in 1999, 12 out of the 17 recipients for
Miss Maine Softball have been pitchers. Thornton Academy’s Julia
Geaumont ’12 also earned the title her senior year.
Rod Choroszy ’67 Inducted Into
Maine Baseball Hall of Fame
Old Orchard Beach resident Rod Choroszy ’67 has been playing or
coaching baseball since he was eight years old. “It keeps me going,” he
said. A highly successful player and coach, Rod was inducted into the
Maine Baseball Hall of Fame at a ceremony on July 26 in Portland. Rod
was a three-sport athlete (football, basketball, and baseball) at Thornton
Academy and earned All Telegram League honors for baseball twice
while at Thornton. He then pitched for legendary coach Jack Butterfield
at the University of Maine and graduated with a degree in education.
Rod is currently an assistant coach with the University of Southern
Maine Huskies, which won the 2015 Little East Conference Baseball
Championship—the third title for the team in the last four years.
Associate Head John Ritzo Inducted
Into Maine Ski Hall of Fame
On October 24, the Maine Ski Hall of Fame will induct
Associate Head of Advancement John Ritzo and seven others
at their 13th annual banquet held at Sunday River. Ritzo
joined the Thornton Academy community five years ago, but
prior to that he established Carrabassett Valley Academy’s
legendary status in the ski world. Ritzo came to Maine in 1986
and became Headmaster of the three-year-old Carrabassett
Valley Academy, a position he held for 26 years. The list of
international and Olympic competitors who attended CVA
included gold medal winners Bode Miller and Seth Wescott.
