Modderfontein circa 1950s
This is a photo in a collection of mine,
taken by Dave Sparrow around 1985/
1990. I like reminding our communi-
ty from time to time that we should be
eternally thankful to Dave Sparrow, a
very well-known developer, whose ge-
nius, foresight and commitment to this
area, was the beginning of the transfor-
mation of Thornhill, previously known
as ‘Modder Village’, into becoming one of
the most sought after estates in Gauteng.

od when the area was descending into
becoming a slum – and that is no exagger-
ation.
Every now and then, when I come across
pics of the old Modder Village like one at
the entrance to our very beautiful estate, I again do not exaggerate, when
I tell you my heart almost skips a beat. The memories come flooding back
into my very being. This was the road to the shops the café and Dam 1.
I clearly remember at a very young age my Mom holding my hand down
this road so many times taking me for a swim at the dam (where all the
