Modderfontein Library
“I enjoyed the article on the Modderfontein library written by Keith Mar-
tin, however, there is a part missing from the sixties. Before the library
was built on the north side of Queen’s road at the local shopping centre,
the lending library for adults and children began in the Casino building
which at that time was referred to as ‘the club’. It was upstairs and we
accessed it by climbing the highly polished red staircase on the outside of
the building.
The staircase was treacherous in summer when it rained. We came to
Modderfontein in 1957 from the UK and lived in Lakeside, at 7 Scoat Ave,
8 Scoat Ave and 1 Scoat Ave. Every Friday evening my father took my sis-
ter and I to the library at the ‘club’ where we were allowed to choose two
books each. During our school holidays my sister and I rode our bicycles
up to the library (we read a lot of books). Sometimes we arrived when
the library was shut for lunch but the female librarian always opened up
when she saw us peering through the door. The librarians encouraged us
to read and were always very kind. The Modderfontein library at the ‘club’
was a magic place for me and inspired me with a great love for reading.”
