MODDERFONTEIN LIFE
The Modderfontein Library
A meeting was held on 20 February 2018 to discuss the way forward for
Modderfontein Library in the light of developments currently underway in
the area. Attendees included Ward 32 Councillor Bongani Nkomo, Library
Information Services Deputy Directors Ms Atilla Lourens and Ms Ntombi
Tladinyane plus members of the Friends of Modderfontein Library.
Contrary to what the Friends were led to believe in the initial stages of
discussions with the developers Nevada, a recent offer of rental premises in
the new centre proved to be prohibitively expensive and not a viable propo-
sition for the City. The library will therefore not be opening in the shopping
centre.
There was discussion concerning the closest Johannesburg library, name-
ly Linbro Park library, and the Friends agreed that possible collaboration
should be investigated. However at this point Linbro Park library is in dire
need of an upgrade and the opening hours are not user friendly for the
community. Resources currently earmarked for Modderfontein library had
it reopened could be channelled towards this upgrade.

Cllr Bongani Nkomo suggested an urgent site inspection of Linbro Park
library by the Friends and any interested members of the community and
this was agreed upon.
In addition Library Information Services will devise a business plan for the
short term upgrade of the library including premises, stock and furniture as
well as staffing.
Friends of Modderfontein library sincerely thank the local community for
their support over the past almost seven years: book sales have been well
attended and lively, Story Time sessions were enjoyed by local children and
Coffee Mornings with authors and speakers have been extremely popular.
The Modderfontein and Greenstone community will miss the library and
its Friends and it was felt that the activities and associated fellowship en-
hanced the ‘village-like’ atmosphere of the area.
However it is hoped that this energy and enthusiasm will inject new life
into Linbro Park library and the community can look forward to increased
activity and literary events.
