This Italianate-style house was built for winter resident James Whitehead Paxton of Wheeling , West Virginia in 1884-1885 . Paxton was a prominent banker , but is best known as one of the founding fathers of West Virginia . Paxton began visiting Thomasville for his health in 1882 and continued to do so until his death . For many years , the main house and surrounding out buildings served as a bed and breakfast . The house is currently owned by Allen Cheney and Ryan Smith and operates as an inn , hosting up to 13 guests .
