Reading like a dark academia novel with a philosophical bend , the book leaves the agenda of each and every character in a veiled uncertainty until the very end and beyond .
any other dark academia novel , the questions and ideas of time , thought and morality that the author introduces are fascinating and a remove from the ordinary plot line of its genre .
These questions lie within a spectrum of interests : science , psychology , philosophy , ethics , morality . What if time was not linear ? What if it was a physical object ? Is it within the best of interest of humankind that every discovery be shared ? Is there a sacrifice to each and every duality ? “ To be or not to be ?” Within every chapter lies a question begging to be explored on a personal level , leaving you to ponder things outside of the book ’ s pages . However , what lies within those pages will not leave you wanting .
Blake has created a cast of deeply developed characters , each layer pulling back to reveal another labyrinth of being . It is as if every protagonist were breathing , every page exposing a new aspect of their nature that requires them to question what they know and believe to be true about themselves , leaving each in a state of personal unraveling . It feels as if you are travelling in a speed version of life-long self-discovery occurring throughout this relatively short period of time that only a cloistered world of academia and a game of survival can bring . I , for one , was eating it right up .
You do not have to be a fan of fantasy novels to become enmeshed in Blake ’ s secret society . While magic plays a large role within the book , one could say that it is more a matter of perspective as opposed to “ magic ” per se . While the fictional society ’ s ultimate goal is one of fantastical proportions , it actually does not stray far from the goal of any real-life secret or exclusive society . So , regardless of magically abilities , the story is one based on realities that we may or not believe to truly exist . Leaving you with yet another question : Could such an organization actually exist ? One wonders …
