Hello and welcome to the July edition of Thomasville Scene . In April I was lucky enough to attend the Hands on Thomas County Cheers for Volunteers Awards Banquet , which acknowledges the efforts and hours put in by the unsung heroes of Thomas County .
These unsung heroes don ’ t volunteer for the awards or accolades , they simply give back because they love our community .
Like many , I was required to volunteer in high school , but I never really found a place I felt like I fit in . My senior year of high school I traveled with YoungLife to Jasper , Georgia for family camp . It was there that I was placed with the daycare and found my love for volunteering with kids .
I would go on to work and volunteer in my church nursery for four years , keeping kids from ages newborn- 3 , helping them learn to walk , share with others and even the dreaded potty training .
Of course there would be days I would be tired and I think I couldn ’ t keep doing this , but in the end the hugs and the love shown by these kids made every time worthwhile .
I hope the stories of these volunteers inspire everyone to find a place they fit in as well . If you ’ re like me , the first few places may not be for you , but I promise there is a volunteer community out there for everyone , and sometimes it finds you !
I am thankful for the dedication that every person in this edition has shown . These “ heroes ” may not have been awarded , but the difference they are making with children , schools and families does not go unnoticed .
I ’ ve been reminded throughout this edition how lucky and blessed we are to live in a community that desires to make the world a better place day by day . I hope this edition reminds you of the good that is all around us too !
