020 is off to a roaring start for
expert global firm Cleveland Cable
Company.
The £300m annual turnover
business, based in Middlesbrough, has
already notched up three huge accolades -
passing a major audit with flying colours and
gaining important quality and environmental
markers to drive it into a new decade.
To customers of the UK’s largest cable
distributor, it means one vital thing - the

standards.

Built from scratch by brothers Alastair
and Michael Powell in 1978, it has decades
of experience delivering complete cable
solutions to some of the world’s most
demanding industries in projects around the
globe.
The ability to adapt and evolve has been
key as new cable ranges and technology are
developed and growing customer demand,
from a portfolio of international clients, is
backed up by a network of trusted suppliers
who work closely to ensure best possible lead
times and delivery.
“The company has grown from just a
handful of people when Michael and I
started out to a business with a £300m-a-year
turnover, employing 600 staff,” says Alastair.
“But we’re two people out of 600 - we’ve
got such a fantastic team of people, many
who’ve worked for Cleveland Cable
Company for 30 years or more.
“There’s a massive pool of skilled,
dedicated and loyal people who’ve grown
with the company almost since day one.
They are all instrumental in the company’s
ongoing success.”
The firm is incredibly proud of its
Teesside roots and retains its head office on
Middlesbrough’s Riverside Park industrial
estate alongside eight locations across the
UK and Ireland, including branches in
Aberdeen, Glasgow, Newcastle, Warrington,
Milton Keynes, London, Bristol and Dublin.
A branch in Dubai acts as a hub and
has enabled the company to successfully
penetrate the UAE market and beyond.

The firm was proud to become the
world’s first cable distributor to hold
BASEC-registered stockist status, which

2019 saw the company complete a custom-
built testing centre in Middlesbrough
and gain its newest certification, the BSI
Kitemark for internal testing, closely

followed in 2020 by passing its first BSI
audit with zero non-conformances against
the rigid standard which complements the
existing Quality Management ISO9001 and
Environmental 14001 approvals.
“I don’t often stop to think about it but
when I take a moment to step back from it
all, it still surprises and staggers me how big
the company has become,” adds Alastair.
“I’m proud to have our head office here
on Teesside, which hopefully results in us
making a successful contribution to our local
area."
The BSI Kitemark is only awarded after
a long and exhaustive process of cable
sampling and verification of internal systems.
Meeting the stringent process, says the
firm, means Cleveland Cable Company has
become certified to the highest standard to
internally test all cables, giving customers the
peace of mind that the cable they order is the
cable they receive.
Cleveland Cable Company also regularly
undertakes in-house quality checks and
assessments to ensure its products meet high
standards.
