overing 4,500 acres, the South Tees
Development Corporation was
the first Mayoral Development
Corporation to be set up outside of Greater
London.
Chaired by the Tees Valley mayor, it
anchors Tees Valley’s response to the Northern
Powerhouse and the government's industrial
strategy.
Under the direction of the Development
Corporation board and with powers
transferred from Whitehall, there is a 25-year
vision for a world-class industrial zone heavily
focused on clean energy, the circular economy
and industrial symbiosis and advanced
manufacturing.
The site has already attracted significant
interest from investors across the globe
and this will only grow as the development
corporation further secures land and assets on
the site, bringing them into public ownership.
This began with the purchase of 1,420 acres
from Tata Steel Europe, representing more
than half of all developable land within the site
– an area the size of Gibraltar.
Proceedings to secure 870 acres of land
at the former SSI Steelworks are now also
underway.
Already, the world’s largest purpose-built
biomass energy plant, the £650m MGT
Teesside, is nearing completion on the site and
the area will provide access to export for the
world’s largest polyhalite mine, accessed from
a 23-mile tunnel to the Sirius Minerals mine in
