How the Port of Middlesbrough is strengthening its position in the bulk cargo sector

At a time when supply chains are under increasing pressure to be more resilient, efficient and sustainable, the Port of Middlesbrough is carving out a distinct role as a specialist hub for bulk cargo handling in the UK.

Owned and operated by AV Dawson, the Teesside port has been steadily expanding its capabilities in dry bulk, building on its long-established strengths as a multimodal logistics centre on the River Tees.
While it continues to handle break bulk, project cargo and materials for the renewable energy sector, a sharper focus on bulk commodities is now shaping the port’ s future direction.
That focus is already delivering results. Over the past 12 months, the Port of Middlesbrough has handled more than 200,000 tonnes of dry bulk cargo, with volumes continuing to rise as customers look for partners capable of managing increasingly complex material flows.
A key part of the port’ s growth story lies in the diversity of materials now moving through the site. From ferrous sulphate and polyhalite to petroleum coke, salt and other industrial products, the range reflects both the evolving needs of industry and the port’ s ability to adapt.
Rather than specialising in a single commodity, the strategy has been to develop the flexibility required to handle multiple bulk products safely and efficiently.
This adaptability is becoming a defining feature, particularly as customers seek ports that can integrate seamlessly into wider logistics networks.
Central to this positioning is a sustained programme of investment in infrastructure designed specifically for bulk handling.
The port’ s dedicated dry bulk facility provides a controlled environment for storage, handling and onward distribution, ensuring cargo integrity from vessel to final destination.
The next phase of development is already underway. A new rail unloading facility is being constructed adjacent to Middlesbrough Goods Yard, designed to handle a wide range of aggregates at rates of up to 500 tonnes per hour.
Its location and design underline the port’ s commitment to multimodal connectivity, linking sea, rail and road to create efficient end-to-end logistics solutions.
With large-scale storage capacity, covered warehouse space for sensitive materials and integrated weighing systems, the facility is geared towards both operational precision and scalability.
Crucially, its direct rail links also support lower-carbon freight options, aligning with customers’ growing sustainability targets.
