Gillian Baker , head of commercial ‐ new business at Sembcorp , is focused on attracting new businesses to the site .
Gillian started her career on Teesside working for ICI and has more than 20 years of experience gained from a range of positions within international chemical manufacturing , supply chain infrastructure and energy businesses .
She is passionate about rejuvenating the site and on delivering decarbonised development projects to unlock the potential that Wilton and the wider Teesside cluster has to offer .
We asked Gillian for her thoughts on the exciting future of Wilton and Teesside .
GILLIAN , HOW IS TEESSIDE LEADING THE WAY IN THE UK ’ S ENERGY TRANSITION ? “ Teesside has an ambition to become the world ’ s first net zero industrial cluster by 2040 and is also earmarked for the UK ’ s first Carbon Capture Usage and Storage ( CCUS ) network development as well as blue and green hydrogen plants . The region has a significant part to play in reducing the UK ’ s carbon emissions on the path to net zero and Wilton is well placed to connect into the emerging low-carbon hydrogen and CCUS networks .”
WHAT SERVICES DO SEMBCORP OFFER AT WILTON ? “ Sembcorp owns 450 acres of available development land at Wilton and can offer pre-consented industrial development plots with ready-to-use power , utilities and infrastructure , reducing investment project costs , risk and timeframes .
“ We provide on-site energy-intensive industrial businesses with combined heat and power via an established private wire network , the largest in the UK that supplies electricity generated by gas , biomass and energy-from-waste .
“ At Wilton we also own , operate and maintain the UK ’ s largest demineralised water production and distribution network which could provide a strong benefit for operators within the hydrogen economy .”
WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR WILTON ? “ Sembcorp ’ s ambition is to transform Wilton into a net zero industrial park . We are committed to helping our existing customers to reduce their carbon emissions and we ’ re keen to attract new customers who work within more sustainable areas such as battery storage , hydrogen and sustainable aviation fuels .
“ As we work to regenerate and redesign Wilton we are also aiming to collaborate to create further benefits for those on site utilising shared infrastructure and optimising energy efficiency through heat integration . With this ambition we see it ’ s also vital to invest in the next generation to help them develop the skills they will need to support a net zero future .
“ Our award-winning apprenticeship programme has been recognised by the NEPIC awards in 2023 and 2024 and by the Tees Business 2024 awards and will continue to help develop the workforce of tomorrow .”
