Gertrude Bell .
Captain James Cook
Born in Marton , now part of Middlesbrough , and raised in the nearby village of Great Ayton , James Cook is widely regarded as one of the greatest explorers in history . As a naval officer , he undertook three pioneering voyages into uncharted
Captain James Cook . territories between 1768 and 1779 to the Pacific Ocean , New Zealand and Australia and making significant contributions to the fields of geography , anthropology and cartography . He achieved the first recorded European contact with the eastern coastline of Australia and the Hawaian Islands , as well as the first recorded circumnavigation of New Zealand . Cook ' s navigational skills and scientific approach revolutionised the understanding of the world , and his legacy is felt to this day .
Gertrude Bell
A pioneering archaeologist , writer and diplomat , Gertrude Bell ’ s extensive knowledge of the Middle East and deep understanding of the region ' s cultural and historical complexities earned her the title " Queen of the Desert ” and “ the female Lawrence of Arabia ”. Raised in Redcar , the daughter of a former Middlesbrough mayor , she played a crucial role in shaping the modern Middle East , particularly in her involvement in the formation of Iraq and her support for Arab self-determination . Before launching her extraordinary career , Bell was also the first woman to graduate from Oxford University with a first class honours degree in Modern History .
Andy Green OBE
Wing commander Andy Green OBE has been the world land speed record holder since 1997 when he became the first man to break the sound barrier . Raised in Hartlepool and Marske , he became an RAF fighter pilot but is best known for driving jet car ThrustSSC to 714mph in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada , USA .
