The major investments changing the face of the Tees Valley
NET ZERO TEESSIDE Investment : £ 1.5bn Jobs : Up to 5,500 The UK ’ s first fully integrated , commercial-scale gasfired power station with carbon capture , utilisation and storage capabilities , paving the way to establish a fully decarbonised industrial cluster by 2040 .
BP ’ S HYDROGEN PROJECTS Two large-scale hydrogen production facilities – HyGreen Teesside producing green hydrogen , H2Teesside producing blue – with a combined 1.5GW capacity , which could deliver 30 per cent of the government ’ s 5GW hydrogen production target by 2030 .
SEAH WIND OFFSHORE FACILITY Investment : £ 300m Jobs : 2,250 The world ’ s largest factory for the manufacture of offshore wind monopiles , the huge steel tubes that form the foundations of the construction of offshore wind turbines . Construction started in July 2022 at the site on Teesworks , part of the Teesside Freeport .
TEESSIDE FREEPORT Jobs : Up to 18,000 The Teesside Freeport is the UK ’ s biggest and first operational freeport covering 4,500 acres at key sites across the region , with Teesworks at its heart . Freeports are secure customs zones located at ports where business can be carried out inside a country ’ s land border , but where different customs rules apply , attracting inward investment and promoting innovation .
DARLINGTON ECONOMIC CAMPUS Jobs : 1,100 The government is establishing a new hub in the town , bringing 1,100 new civil service roles by 2025 . Staff will be housed at the campus from the Treasury , the Department for International Trade , the Department for Business , Energy and Industrial Strategy , the Department for Levelling Up , Housing and Communities , the Department for Digital , Culture , Media and Sport , the Office for National Statistics and the Competition and Markets Authority . More than 100 Treasury jobs are now at the site .
GE RENEWABLE ENERGY OFFSHORE FACILITY Jobs : 2,250 A new factory dedicated to the production of 107-metrelong offshore wind turbine blades , a key component in GE ’ s Haliade-X , the most powerful offshore turbines built today and used at Dogger Bank .
Transformational projects are taking place right across the Tees Valley now . Teesworks is driving forward some of the projects in the cleaner , safer and healthier industries of the future , the government has committed to basing 1,100 civil servants at its new Darlington Economic Campus and the region has become home to the Teesside Freeport – the largest and first operational freeport in the UK .
Billions of pounds of investment is being made by global firms coming here to capitalise on our low-carbon potential , longstanding companies are expanding their operations and the government is establishing a major presence – all creating thousands of jobs in the process .

TEESSIDE AIRPORT BUSINESS PARK Investment : £ 200m Jobs : Up to 4,400 A new 1.9m-sq ft business park on the southside of Teesside International Airport , made up of logistics , distribution and industrial buildings , with direct access from the nearby A67 .
SEMBCORP ENERGY ’ S EUROPE-LEADING BATTERY Jobs : 70 Europe ’ s largest battery , a 360MW energy storage system , will be built on its site on Wilton International , helping the UK to meet its net zero targets .
SABIC CRACKER PLANT REOPENING Investment : Up to £ 850m Jobs : Safeguarding and creating 1,000 SABIC is to restart its hydrocarbon cracker , the second largest in Europe , which breaks down hydrocarbons to produce chemicals such as ethylene , propylene and butadiene . A second phase will see it converted to run on hydrogen .
ALFANAR ’ S LIGHTHOUSE GREEN FUELS PROJECT Investment : £ 1bn Jobs : 940 Alfanar group is aiming to be the first company to produce sustainable aviation fuel ( SAF ) from waste at scale in the UK by converting household and commercial waste into 180m litres of SAF and liquid hydrocarbon naptha .
FUJIFILM DIOSYNTH BIOTECHNOLOGIES MANUFACTURING SITE Investment : £ 400m Jobs : 350 FUJIFILM is creating the largest multi-modal biopharmaceutical manufacturing site in the UK , more than doubling the site ’ s existing development . It will add a new cell culture facility and expand its vital and gene therapy services .
CIRCULAR FUELS ’ RENEWABLE GAS FACILITY Investment : £ 150m Jobs : More than 200 This facility will take non-recyclable residual waste from households and industry , converting it into renewable dimethyl ether ( rDME ). This safe , cost-effective and cleanburning renewable fuel can be stored in cylinders to help decarbonise the normally hard-to-reach properties not connected to the UK ’ s national gas grid . When fully up and running in 2024 , it will have the capacity to produce 50,000 tonnes of fuel per year .
