“I
always say, I was meant to be a
dermatologist,” maintains Cole
Fulwider, M.D., who at the age
of eleven was performing controlled
experiments on her own arm after
getting sunburn. “I was a local
California girl—we had a little beach
gang that lived on the sand a lot,” Dr.
Fulwider began, as she explained
intentionally peeling one arm while on
the other, “I babied it.”
Dr. Fulwider says that she “learned
something from doing that.” Her
conclusion, “you want to peel evenly
after a bad sunburn otherwise you’ll get
spots.”
Putting your finger on what draws
people to Cole Fulwider, M.D.—warmly
referred to as Dr. Cole in the surfing
community and her home town—
requires more than just your ten digits.
“I’ve always wanted to be like her
because she just inspires me,” said Tina
Miley, R.N., who has worked a day or
two per week with Dr. Fulwider for the
past sixteen years.
