I always knew I wanted to go into the health field but it wasn’t until a representative from the Marquette Dental School gave a presentation to my college group that I opened my eyes to the profession. I then joined a summer program at the dental school that year and wound up loving it. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO GO OUT ON YOUR OWN? I worked at a corporate chain of offices for the first 8 years of my career. I saw many unhappy employees & doctors come and go and I knew that I too was frustrated with limitations preventing me from reaching my true potential. With their business model sending so much of our local dollars to the East Coast I came to the conclusion they were not able to afford to attract but more importantly KEEP good talented individuals. I saw how the high turnover was affecting the quality of patient care and I knew there was a better way. Supporting a local economy can do amazing things like allow to us charge less, pay employees more, lead happier healthier lives, and deliver better quality care to name a few things. WHAT IS A COMMON QUESTION / COMMENT THAT YOU HEAR FROM CUSTOMERS? Will my insurance cover it?” – Although insurance can help keep your out of pocket expenses down, they usually have a lot of limitations which don’t always have your best interests in mind. Think about what is best for you when making treatment decisions, not just what your insurance plan says will cost them the least. WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE SOMEONE LOOKING TO GO INTO THE DENTISTRY FIELD? Doing well in school is important but most people who apply for dental school have good grades. So it is important to be well rounded and involved in, or lead other activities. It is not important to have any work experience in the dental field but it may be useful to know if you think you will ultimately like the profession as a career.
