Hope and heartbreak optimised Jurgen Klopp ' s first season in charge at Anfield. The lovable German steered his side to both the League Cup and Europa League finals, only to lose both. Despite those final hurdle jitters, there were promising signs, albeit mixed with a hefty dose of defensive frailty and poor finishing. Daniel Sturridge showcased his best form towards the latter part of the campaign, but it was another injury plagued year for the England striker. Another top quality striker is surely essential if Klopp has hopes of improving on their eighth place showing. One thing is for sure. When there ' s Klopp, there is entertainment. The German has already won the hearts of English fans and will hope to transfer his positive philosophy to matters on the field.
Who ' s in and who ' s out?
Saido Mane is the headline signing so far, arriving from Liverpool ' s favourite feeder club Southampton for an eye watering £ 34m. Joel Matip has arrived at Anfield on a free, with fellow centre back cover joining him in the shape of Estonia captain Ragnar Klavan. Georginio Wijnaldum cost another £ 23m from Newcastle, while many have left. Martin Skrtel, Joe Allen, Kolo Toure and Jordan Ibe are among many to be shown the door by Klopp.
Season expectations?
The cliche ' it ' s our year ' will leave the lips of a few Liverpool fans, but a return to the Champions League would be the realistic starting block in Klopp ' s first full season. Without European football, it could be a chance to climb the table.
What ' s their reality?
Transforming Liverpool back into a heavyweight will be no quick fix, even for Klopp. Time will be needed, and this will be a season to soon for any talk of title ambitions. Fourth at best, but a Europa League spot could be the best outcome.
Fixtures to look out for
Man United at home on October 15th and Everton away in mid-December are the standouts. Despite a smooth ending, their start is tough. They face Arsenal, Spurs and Chelsea in their first three away games.
