Textile hybrid: based on isolated bent compression members
Master´s degree in Parametric Design in Architecture
V. METHODOLOGY
To continue with the research it is important to under-
stand the restrictions and the framework in which will be
conducted. The hybrid tensile systems allow a wide
possibilities in experimentation and investigation. Below
we will see some important guidelines.
5.1. PHYSICAL AND DIGITAL
FORM-FINDING EXPERIMENTATION
The experimentation was started with three basic planar
pre-stress physical systems (Figure B1, First phase):
-Case 1: reciprocal frame
-Case 2: overlapping frame
-Case 3: system wich allows ondulate skin
The second phase involved in getting double curvature
system with stiffness. It was noticed that the Case 2 was
suitable for this purpose and the Case 1 increase its
intrinsic stiffness (Figure B1, Second phase). As it can
be seen the case 2 create a dome-like shape and also it
could be considered that it could be a part of a sphere. So
in the third phase it was tryed to close the dome system
to got a spherical shape (Figure B1, Third phase). Once
it was got, an academic research was started in spherical
topology, gaussian curvatures, angular defect and Poin-
caré characteristic in order to amplify the scope of the
system and be able to create it with several applications
into a larger architectural enclosures. Aslo the digital
simulations were started (Figure B1, Fourth phase).
Geometrical approaches that are homeomorphic to a
sphere (Figure B2,3 and 4) were done and we figured out
that the reciprocal frames has a wide potential in the field
of hybrid active-bending structures. It was started with
platonic and archimedes solids and then it was added
more deffinition (subdivision) in the meshes.
