virulent and violent antisemitism not seen in almost 90 years .
We read in the Talmud , “ From the day that the Temple was destroyed , the gates of tears are not closed .” 19 Since October 7 , the gates of tears have been flooded .
The new year will soon be upon us . I remain hopeful that the growing darkness near the end of that long day of prayer will bring me once again to ask God “ Open for us a gate …”. For every day in the Aleinu , I hope and pray that this new year will be the time when “ all flesh will call out Your name — [ and ] even the wicked will turn towards You .” And that this year , on Simchat Torah , as we again sing “ Pit ’ hu li sha ’ arei tzedek ,” the gates of righteousness be open for us all . May we all pass through those gates in peace .
