Shofar to my Lips Shari Salzhauer Berkowitz
I put the shofar to my lips . Can you hear it ? Can you hear Sarah ’ s voice as she cries for her son on the altar ? Can you hear the captives , wailing to be released ? Can you hear the sound of young women , attacked in their homes or at the Nova festival ? Can you hear machine gun fire in the staccato of the Teruah ?
I put the shofar to my lips . Can You hear it ? Can You hear us , crying for salvation ? Can You hear us , begging for the release of the captives ?
As You heard us moaning under Egypt ’ s slavery As You heard us as we whispered in our hearts As You heard us every time the shofar sounded . Hear us now . We beg you .
