Sukkot Reflection Rabbi Len Muroff
As we stand on the verge of marking Sukkot 5785 , it is hard not to hearken back to the devastating end of Sukkot last year - the murderous rampage of Hamas on October 7th , 2023 . That day our hearts broke repeatedly as the details of the unprecedented attacks streamed in , and filled our bodies and souls with feelings of grief , horror , and disbelief . Our hearts remain broken . It feels like it is still October 2023 .
For many , October 7th was not a long time ago . We are consumed with a sense of insecurity about our safety in Israel , and here in the United States . Additionally , the stories of sexual violence inflicted on the innocent Israeli women leave us appalled at the actions of the attackers , and at the inaction by the world community . Their silence is deafening .
Sukkot , the Festival of Booths , when we gather outside with dear ones to mark having ended the period of deep reflection and introspection of the Days of Awe offers us a path forward , despite our persistent feelings of despair .
Sukkot offers hope to those feeling unmoored and unsure how to move forward , personally and collectively . On Sukkot , we leave the illusion of the protection of the solid walls of our homes . We feel vulnerable yet safe , as we gather together with friends and family as well as the biblical guests , the Ushpizin .
