Florence Mills:

"The Queen of Happiness"

The “Queen of Happiness” Florence Mills was an African American cabaret singer, dancer, and comedian. She had a lasting impact on the Harlem Renaissance and on the Broadway stage through her work.

Florence Mills was born Florence Winfrey on January 25, 1896 in Washington D.C. Her parents were former slaves. Florence began performing at a six years old singing with her two older sisters Maude and Olivia. They called themselves the “Mills Sisters”, this is where Florence adopted her stage name “Florence Mills”. Eventually Florence’s sisters quit show business, but Florence was determined to make it big. In 1917 at the age of 21, Florence met her future husband Ulysses “the slow kid” Thompson while traveling with the show Tennessee Ten. She would be married to him until her death.
