AMD THREADRIPPER XOC
– ROG ZENITH EXTREME
I
t’s not often that my first valid
experience with a new or
unreleased platform is literally
using it at the edge of what it is
capable of. However, this is exactly
what happened with AMD’s much
vaunted ThreadRipper or X399
platform.
I had literally only managed to
gather some info and spend a couple

interaction with it was having to
prepare the platform for extreme
overclocking. That said, it was not
only intimidating, but had a massive
learning curve.
As many of you have experienced,
Ryzen overclocking isn’t as forgiving
or as straight forward as what
you might get with the INTEL
platforms. There’s a lot more to
get your head around and, at the
very least, the systems are even
more unpredictable under extreme
temperature environments. With
that said though, the frustration
of dealing with the 1950X at -185’C
cannot be understated, but at
the same time it is oddly enough
rewarding.
It’s the first desktop CPU that
makes 32 threads available to
us, and I’ve been involved with
overclocking for a very long time.
