It would be incorrect to characterise this model as we would its predecessors . That ’ s simply because NVIDIA has turned off a lot more on this model than they did with previous GPUs . There was a certain expectation with the GTX 1070 relating to how it would be configured , but as it turns out , from the available 2560 CUDA cores on the silicon . The GTX 1070 must make do with only 1920 . Less than what is actually available on the mobile or notebook version of the GTX 1070 which has 2048 cores . How this happened will remain a mystery but suffice to say that it leads to a greater difference in performance than normal .
That isn ’ t to say that the GTX 1070 is slow , to the contrary , when compared with last generations fastest Graphics cards in the GTX 980 Ti KPE . The overclocked G1 . Gaming GTX 1070 fares rather well , putting up number that shame the once mighty GTX 980 TI , without using anything near that amount of power . It ’ s again a situation where the GPU is best suited for WQHD gaming much like it ’ s older brother the GTX 1080 .
Configured much like the GTX 1080 , for the most part , it does feature the less expensive GDDR5 memory over a similar 256-bit bus . The memory bandwidth is only 256GiB / s , but together with the 4th generation colour compression technology as employed on all Pascal GPUs , it effectively ends up being more than that . Which should go a long way into explaining why the graphics card keeps up so well with the 980 TI which has far more bandwidth at its disposal .
As with all GTX 1070 cards , the G1 GAMING uses SAMSUNG GDDR5 which as you ’ d expect offers some great overclocking potential . This particular G1 GAMING model was capable of 9.2GHz comfortably , but it is not the highest we have tested as a competing GTX 1070 managed above 9.7GHz . At this point however , the differences are academic . The G1 . GAMING at 9.2GHz memory clock is fairly close to what the 1080 offers with GDDR5X .
As is the case with the GTX 1060 , memory bandwidth overclocking yields the most relevant results when gaming . Synthetic tests yield a slightly different story ( which says a lot about these tests actually ), but given that these cards are meant for and will likely only ever spend their time gaming , this is what really matters .
If for some reason you had hoped that with enough of an overclock , perhaps a full coverage GPU block as well you would be able to somewhat come close to GTX 1080 performance , well that isn ’ t going to happen . You ’ ll perhaps enjoy a more stable boost clock , but the truth is that , the GPU runs cool as it is and the GIGABYTE WINDFORCE 3X cooler , even though not as potent as the ones on the XG line of GPUs , is more than enough to keep this GPU operating at near peak performance . Given the pricing , it ’ s again a difficult task finding something to fault with the GPU , perhaps even to the point where it makes the XG version pointless .
