At any given moment there’s an
astonishing amount of destruction
being wrought in a Hardline match –
but it somehow feels tame compared
to the sheer bedlam of other games in
this series.
This dip in the level of chaos is
largely due to a shift in focus. I’ve
always felt that Battlefield is at its
weakest when it attempts to lock away
its mechanical toys and put infantry
combat in the spotlight, and infantry
battles are Hardline’s bread and
butter. Sure, it’s sporting muscle cars,
light attack choppers and armoured
SUVs, but the cops-versus-crims
theme means that the more exotic
hardware is absent. There are no
jets screaming overhead, peppering
the map with deadly ordnance. You’ll
not find any pesky artillery barrages
slamming into the building you’re in
and ruining your day. It’s missing the
feeling of terror that floods over you
when a tank appears on the horizon

and the only gear you’ve got to fend
it off is some pocket lint and a loose
