Power. Performance. Perfection. INTEL 3rd Generation Core i7 – Power like never before! S ome may not like it, others underwhelmed even. After all, what is a 7% increase in performance clock for clock? Expectations, promises, rumours, lies, conjecture, leaked results. Whatever it may have been, the “gamers” and regular users were expecting; Ivy-Bridge CPUs have turned out to be anything but that. Who cares though right? I mean for us enthusiasts it could have been a 2% increase in performance, higher memory multipliers and much higher clock speeds we’d likely have been impressed with Ivy-Bridge. Fortunately however we have something even better. Be it the 22nm tri-gate technology or some other technological breakthrough, INTEL has delivered to us what we have sorely missed since the Core 2 days. That is, a CPU that plays all our favourite games, in particular 3DMark2001se. An ancient benchmark for sure, but it never gets old here and the results that 3rd generation core CPUs are capable of are nothing short of astounding. We have a winner here and we are thoroughly impressed at TheOverclocker with Ivy-Bridge. The technical wizardry of what makes this CPU tick you’ll find in numerous reviews all over the web. That’s not what we are here to repeat 10 The OverClocker Issue 19 | 2012 to you, we are only interested in the breakneck performance under LN2. We’d have liked to say Dry Ice is still loads of fun on this platform, but it’s not, it’s just not cold enough and you’ll really want some LN2 to get the most out of these CPUs. So then, briefly what are we looking at you may ask? We’re looking at the first mass produced 22nm node CPU. Besides, the smaller node, INTEL has manufactured this on a tri-gate technology which it claims lowers leakage by 37% while allowing faster switching speeds and higher drive current. What that translates into is cooler and better performing CPUs. Lower temperatures, well that’s debatable as some of the disappointment that gamers have levelled at the CPUs are the much higher operating temperatures when compared to Sandy-Bridge.
