5. Divide the class into small groups to participate in the student handout titled, “What to Do?
Moral Decisions on Prom Night.” After they have completed the chart, provide the correct
answers. Then discuss the following questions:
a) Which character created the most debate for your group? Why?
b) To which character did you most closely relate?
c) What are some things that made this assignment difficult?
d) How does this activity validate Kohlberg’s theory?
e) How does it deconstruct Kohlberg’s theory?
f) Would it be good if more of us acted in the Postconventional stage more often? Why
or why not?
g) If more of us acted in the Postconventional stage more often, how might life be
different?

6. Instead of the “Prom Night” activity, students will read an article regarding a controversial
subject that would fuel a class debate, such as abortion, physician- assisted suicide,
capital punishment, etc. After reading the article, students will write a description of their
beliefs supported with reasons why they feel as they do. Divide the class into 2 groups to
discuss the pros and cons of the article. At this time, a debate should be conducted. Upon
completion of the debate, the student responses will be evaluated. The teacher will
question the class, not on the content of their responses, but on what stage of moral
reasoning their responses were based.
