Nyheten om De Beers lansering har ännu en gång lyft diskussionen om syntetiska stenar kontra naturliga , som går över 100 år tillbaka i tiden då kulturpärlor , syntetiska rubiner och safirer kom på marknaden . Och hos De Beers jämför man också just de syntetiska diamanterna med syntetiska safirer , rubiner och smaragder och understryker att deras nya smyckesserie inte ska ses som konkurrens till naturliga diamanter . Syftet är ett helt annat .

Samtidigt med den stigande produktionen och spridningen av de syntetiska diamanterna finns det ett växande behov av att kunna skilja dem från de naturliga . Hos De Beers vill man inte att det ska råda några tvivel om ifall en diamant är syntetisk . Därför kommer alla Lightbox-diamanter , som väger 0,2 carat och däröver , vara märkta med en permanent logotyp inne i stenen som kan ses med mikroskop . Samtidigt har den tekniska utvecklingen kommit långt när det gäller att identifiera de syntetiska stenarna . Idag finns det därför riktigt bra och billiga instrument som är lätta att använda och som snabbt kan ge svar på huruvida en diamant är syntetisk eller inte .

The news of De Beers ’ launch has rekindled the discussion concerning synthetic gems as opposed to natural gems – a discussion that goes back around 100 years , when cultured pearls , synthetic rubies and sapphires came onto the market . And at De Beers , the synthetic diamonds are also comparable to synthetic sapphires , rubies and emeralds , thus underlining the fact that their new jewellery series shouldn ’ t be seen as a competitor to natural diamonds . On the contrary , the aims of the two types of diamond are completely different .

In parallel with the greater production and prevalence of synthetic diamonds , there ’ s a greater need to be able to identify them from natural diamonds . De Beers doesn ’ t want there to be any doubt as to when a diamond is synthetic . Therefore all Lightbox diamonds that weigh 0.2 carats or more will be marked with a permanent logo within the gem . At the same time , technological develop-ment has come a long way in terms of being able to identify synthetic gems . Today , there are really good , cheap instruments that can quickly provide an answer to the question of whether a diamond is synthetic or not .
