Women in business I Nakeisha Lorde Owner of Tutors 246 & Technation grew up in a traditional Christian household with a strong conviction for Christ and a belief that education was the best invest- ment in ones future. However, upon completion of my studies I was thousands of dollars in debt, and unable to find gainful employment. I was at my wits end, thinking that the time, hard work and financial investment in my education were not re- turning any tangible value. I decided to use my skills and my strong conviction in Christ to start my first business, Technation, specializing in websites and developing applications for mobile phones. At the time it was difficult to get the opportunity to prove my competence in a male dominated field and I had limited capital to secure the equipment and software I needed, but through perseverance, and my spiritual investment in the most high, I was able to grow my business and build a strong customer base. My educational background, however, is in the Social Sciences and tutoring. After researching the market, I noticed that there were no online tutors in Barbados at the primary and CXC level. I decided to start Tutors246, which provides home and online tutoring services, and this business is growing as well. I also do freelance programming and am currently working on several software development projects. I would generally advise women entrepreneurs to believe in themselves, draw their strength from Christ, and to never give up no matter how difficult getting your business off the ground may seem .
