All of them wanted to do it for Russell,
who has the PGA Cup flowing through
his veins, and to a man they knew his
passion to win had played a part in him
feeling unwell.
Wallis, who 24 hours earlier had been
unwell, was up from the second against
Sowards rising to five up by the 11th. The
American managed to extend the match,
but not the inevitable, as Wallis won 3&2.
“I said to Russell on the first tee I’m
going to go out and make it as easy for
you as possible,” was Richard Wallis’
words of comfort to their leader, while
Graham Fox confirmed, “Russell being
back on the tee gave us a big lift.”
“My job and Benn’s job this morning
was to try and get up on them early,” said
Wallis. “After a bit of a ropey afternoon
yesterday I came out wanting to try and
prove a point.
The big guns has been loaded up with
Benn Barham, Richard Wallis, Greig
Hutcheon and Scott Henderson out in
the first four matches.
Within half hour Barham and Wallis
had posted blue on the board in their
respective matches with Mike Small and
Bob Sowards.
Barham was briefly hauled back to all
square, but found an extra gear at the
turn and rampaged to a 4&3 win to
register the first point of the singles.

“I wanted to come out and get off to a
fast start and got three birdies in the first
six holes to go three up and he gave me
a couple of holes so to be five up after
eight, I think that potentially lifted the
boys.”
Hutcheon, who scored two points
on Saturday, battled being under the
weather against Kelly Mitchum, no doubt
spurred on after seeing his 100 per cent
record ended by the Scot the previous
day.
It proved a close tussle, which fell the
way of the American, 2&1, to leave the
