GOLF NEWS He joined the Tour in September 2010 and finished third in his first event, the Travis Perkins Senior Masters. He went one better in his next tournament, winning the Casa Serena Open. And so it has continued - in 2011 he had nine top 10 finishes, in 2012 he won twice more and he is enjoyinmg another consistent year this season. For Hale Irwin, read Carl Mason. The Englishman won twice on the European Tour, and there was no sign of what was to come when he turned 50 and joined the Seniors Tour. It turned out that, for Mason at least, life really did begin at 50. So far, he has won 25 times. Throughout a 30-year career on the European Tour, life was a struggle, but when he hit 50, Mason became a serial winner. Others, such as Tommy Horton and Sam Torrance have also enjoyed life with the old boys, winning tournaments, pocketing prize money and enjoying the atmosphere, which is, how shall we put it, a little less tense than they were used to. We are unlikely to see Monty playing in the Bad Ragaz PGA Seniors Open or the Tobago Plantations Seniors Classic, but he will take part in the British Seniors Open and will play plenty of events on the Champions Tour too. He will make shedloads of money. And who knows? He may even finally land that elusive major nd won't care one bit that it doesn't really count. 38 THEZONE / ISSUE 25
