Monty ready for Champions Tour debut

Colin Montgomerie is set to make his Champions Tour debut this week as the leading senior stars prepare for their third major of the season with the Constellation Senior Players Championship .

‘ Monty ’ turned 50 on Sunday and now meets the minimum age requirement to become a playing member of the Tour .
Having failed to win a regular major , he will be aiming to finally break his duck when he tees off at Fox Chapel Golf Club on Thursday .
“ You don ’ t normally look forward to a birthday , do you , when you get towards 50 ” he said in an interview with the Challenge Tour website .
“ But in golfing terms you do . We ’ re very fortunate that in other sports you would be well gone at 50 .”
He revealed that he had been doing his homework on his new Tour , with advice from the likes of Bernhard Langer and Mark O ’ Meara as well as taking in plenty of television coverage .
“ I ' ve been watching more television than I would normally ,” Montgomerie added . “ Sky Sports do a very good job in broadcasting the Champions Tour over to Europe , and I ' m always surprised at the level of competition and standard that the Champions Tour has .
“ Bernhard is a friend and we ’ ve played many matches together and I know how good he is . He ’ s on top of the tree right now , the standard is quite phenomenal and I ’ m in no illusion at all . I look forward to the challenge of it .” He admitted that he had to give considerable thought to the prospect of embarking on the latest chapter of his career .
