Edge Computing
In the past decade , computer processing power has been centralized in the cloud . Data is sent to the cloud for processing , and the results are transmitted to Edge devices . In the Zettabyte world , however , more processing will be ( and must be ) done at the Edge , where the data is generated .
While cloud computing will continue to play a role , Edge computing is a vital part of the data continuum . Investments in more computing power at the Edge will make it quicker and more efficient to process data there , rather than relying on transmitting it to the cloud and back .
“ The Edge in essence is distributed , decentralized and spread across the world … a connected extension of core and cloud – which brings both challenge and opportunity . Data is at the core of any Edge ecosystem and needs to be captured , processed , managed , moved and accessed in an efficient and secure way . With the advent of 5G , we ’ ll see faster and larger data pipelines which in turn will drive innovation in how data is created , captured , and used and with this , the value of Edge based solutions .
However , it also requires a mindset where teams are empowered to work together , and where organizations break free from traditional silos and embrace a holistic and integrated ecosystem that generates value in the seams , not the silos . As customers digitally transform their businesses to utilize more and more data at their Edge , they need to identify opportunities to break down any siloed legacy structure which in turn will enable ecosystem level collaborating and decision making across their organizations . It ’ s all part of an ecosystem and therein lies the opportunity that ’ s in front of us . The Edge is a forcing function that demands multiple layers of this ecosystem be addressed simultaneously . In essence , businesses need to solve for their internal structural Edge to most effectively solve for their digital Edge .”
