What are some tips you can share with our readers about photography, particularly monochrome
photography?
Take photographs for pleasure, enjoy the process
and put some love into your work. Look for those
patterns in your portfolio that will lead your work
forward. There are many ways to take or make a
photograph, don’t be afraid to try new things and
question what a camera can do. Is it simply a device for recording or can it be something altogether
more creative and personal? Look through books of
photography and understand why a picture appeals
to you - is it the composition, the subject matter, the
technique…? When you look at the world around
you try to visualise how it would look if translated
into black and white - would it look better, more
dramatic, more powerful? If you get knocked down,
pick yourself up and try again. Develop a thick skin,
a stiff upper lip and a healthy dose of tenacity!
What is next for you and your photography?
I currently work in the spare bedroom, moving
furniture for photo-shoots. I am working towards
finding a dedicated space where I can spread out a
little, start making larger, staged, photographs and
continue introducing the fantastical aspects into my
work whenever possible.
