Although you have won the title Black
and White Photographer of the Year, your
portfolio contains many colour images. Do
you prefer one medium over the other and
why?

am demonstrating that when a different
perspective is applied, the camera can be
used in different ways to how it is most
commonly used.
I worked almost exclusively in black and
white until buying a digital camera. I am
colour blind and prefer monochrome as
I can name black greys and white. I do
not need to worry about colour casts or
colour combinations, I can focus on light
only. There is a timeless and beautiful
quality to black and white and many of
the photographers that inspired me are
known for their monochrome work. Digital
photography has enabled me to work in
colour, but I admit to playing with those
colours when working on photographs just
as I play with other aspects. But the bulk of
my commercial photography is produced
for the book publishing market and I am not
convinced I could work solely in black and
white.
What do you feel is special about the Leica
M Monochrom camera, apart from the
obvious, that it is a monochrome camera?
What is your Leica M Monochrom
Project? Is it motivated by your designs to
experiment with special camera or is it a
project stemming from your collaboration
with Leica?
It is a record of my journey so far with this
particular camera. I needed to get used to
the Leica and spent the first months getting
to grips with the rangefinder format and
practising fairly straight photography whilst
I learned the ropes. I am not particularly
known for my straight imagery and needed
to steer the camera in my direction. I
am currently wo &
