The Importance of a Fighter Jet Landing on Yamuna Expressway– By Devika Kakkar Landing an airplane on a highway is a difficult task, but many such emergency landings have already taken place in countries around the world. (due to world war II). In India though, it is still unheard of. On the 21 of May 2015, for the first time in India,Mirage2000, a fighter jet landed on the Yamuna Express Highway. It was just a trial landing and fortunately a successful one. Although, it seems easy, considering the resemblance between a runway and highway, there are many hurdles to overcome, like: houses on highways, trees, electric poles, bridges etc. Another reason why the other highways are unfit for such emergency landings is, the fact that they are not built on a level ground. Due to the above hindrances, there have been a few unsuccessful landings across the world. The most glaring examples being: 1. 2. The forced landing of a Pan International airline flying from Hamburg, Germany to Spain, in 1971. The plane made a forced landing on the Kiel-Hamburg highway and killed 22 passengers as a result of an impact with a road bridge. The emergency landing of a southern airway DC-9-31 in 1977. The airplane made an emergency landing on a section of the rural highway in Georgia and the plane met with a variety of ground obstacles like: trees, utility poles, embankments etc. 63 people in the plane and 99 on land were killed. So, even though the step taken by India is a significant one catering to unforeseen contingencies, the success rate depends on how we combat the landing obstructions.
