Surgical Strike in Myanmar You may have heard about the ‘Surgical Strike’ India launched on the Kachin Independence Army or Kachin Rebels, in Myanmar after it obtained the support of the Myanmar Army. A surgical strike is one, where in the enemy base is spotted and only that area is caused damage. Since such a strike requires precision, it’s aptly termed a ‘Surgical Strike’ Here’s more News on the strike, courtesy IBN Live Who are the Kachin People? Kachin is a state in North Myanmar, which shares a border with India and China, both. Kachin has virtually been an independent state since the mid 60’s till 1994, apart from the rail connectivity to the rest of Myanmar and connections with major cities. The state thrives on smuggling, Jade trade with China, and drugs. Recently, the Kachin rebels from KIA, attacked the Indian Army in Manipur, and 18 lives were lost. Post this incident, India got intelligence information regarding two KIA militant bases. India decided to strike. The operation started at 3am in the morning, and the Myanmar Army was informed of the same, only a few minutes before the operation started. The government was subsequently informed only after the ministry offices opened at 9 am. Since India already has a treaty in place with Myanmar, pertaining to cross border terrorism, and this topic had been raised during the East Asia and the India-ASEAN summits last November, there was already an understanding in place, should such a strike be planned. This Surgical Strike has given India’s neighbours a strong signal that India wouldn’t tolerate cross border terrorism.
