Sania Mirza Nominated for the Khel Ratna
Sania Mirza has been recommended for the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award. She
became the second tennis player after Leander Paes to be selected for this honor.
The 28-year-old tennis star, who is currently the world number one in women’s doubles, had
a tough fight for the nomination. Her recent achievements include Wimbledon Doubles Grand
Slam 2015, mixed and women’s doubles categories in 2014 Asian Games (Gold and bronze
medals), US Open 2014, French Open in 2012 and mixed doubles titles at Australia Open in
2009.
Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal shall take the final decision. Once the names are finalized, the same will be made public. The President of India will give away the awards on National Sports Day i.e. August 29.
The Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award is considered the highest honor for achievement in
sports. It is given by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India. The
award is named after the late Rajiv Gandhi, former Prime Minister of India.
