Even Sachin Tendulkar Started as a Child
Yes, we all know Sachin Tendulkar started
playing International Cricket at the Age of 16.
But was he prepared to play with the adults? He
started his career with a test match against
Pakistan. A test match, lasted 5 days, and was a
fairly slow paced game. However batting against
some of the best bowlers Waquar Younis, Wasim
Akram, left him scarred. He felt he wouldn’t be
able to represent India again. Playing against
Pakistan, in Pakistan, against the stalwarts who
were many years older to him, was a big
challenge indeed.

The crowd held placards reading, “Kid, Go Home
and Drink Milk”; Sachin even incurred a head injury, but he didn’t give up. He has written, in his biography’
Playing it My Way, that his first day of International Cricket wasn’t without Drama”. He was in a rival country,
playing a match that most Indians watched intently, and he had to make a mark for himself.

Sachin Tendulkar truly grew into becoming a legend, because he started as one, and so can you. So start playing,
and don’t be afraid when pitted against children older to you. You never know, they may have a big hand in
making you a legend.

What can you do to live up to Chacha Nehru’s Expectations?
1) Find under-privileged children in your locality and start teaching them.
2) Give all elders respect.
3) Ensure you don’t waste food. There are many poor children out there, who don’t get any food because you
waste it.
4) When you see a beggar in the street, ensure your parents don’t give them any money. Instead, if you are
eating something, you could give them some. You could also give them the address of a child shelter in your
city.
5) Get up early in the morning; study hard; and play harder. Enjoy these beautiful years as a child.
6) Do not discriminate between other children. Treat them equal even if they are poor or have a disability, or
are of a different gender.
7) If you see anyone hire a child (anyone under 18 yrs.), without offering her proper education or sending her to
school, ask your parents to report it to the police.
8) Do not buy products that are made by children. For example, you should not buy firecrackers during Diwali.
