Why Telangana?
We all know that India got a new state called Telangana this year. But why was Telangana formed? What is the
history of Telangana?
From 1724 till 1948, a year after Independence, the Hyderabad State
was ruled by the Nizam from the Asaf Jahi Dynasty. The dynasty was
of Turkic origin from the region. These immigrants had entered India
and become employees in the Mughal Empire which came in to power in
Hyderabad State in the 1680s. The empire’s cap ital city was
Hyderabad. When the empire began to weaken in the 18th
century, Asif Jah defeated the rival Mughal governor's attempt to
seize control of the empire's southern provinces. Once he defeated
the Mughal governor, he declared himself the Nizam-al-Mulk of
Hyderabad in 1724. The Mughal emperor, under renewed attack from
the Marathas, was unable to save his throne.
In 1798 Hyderabad became a princely state broadly ruled by the
British East India Company, which basically meant that It had ceded
its external affairs to the British East India company
In 1903 the Berar region (shown in light green in the map) of the
state was separated and merged into the Central Provinces of British
India, to form the Central Provinces and Berar.
In 1947, when India got partitioned, all the princely states got the
option to become part of India or Pakistan, or staying on as an
independent state. The Nizam decided to keep Hyderabad
Independent. The leaders of the new Union of India however, were
wary of having an independent - and possibly hostile - state in the
heart of their new country. Most of the other 565 princely states had already acceded to India or to Pakistan

voluntarily. The Indian government was therefore determined to annex Hyderabad into the Indian Union, by force
if necessary.
