Environment Day
Environmental problems are a threat to human lives. In the present scenario, environmental protection is a big challenge to the society. Increase in levels of pollution, changes in climate and effects of global warming have proved to
be disastrous, both for the living and non-living. Industrial activities are considered harmful for the environment.
However, to create global awareness for a healthy environment and to solve environmental issues, the United Nations
Environment Program (UNEP) celebrates World Environment Day every year on June 5th.
Started in 1973, the UNEP organizes World Environment Day as an effort to generate public awareness to save the environment. Organized each year under a theme, the 2015 theme for World Environment Day is ‘Sustainable consumption and Production’. The slogan for the theme is ‘Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care.’
The theme emphasizes on the responsible management of the planet, which is in turn, responsible for the well-being
of humanity, environment and the economy. It aims to educate people that they are consuming more natural resources
than what the planet can sustainably provide.
A travelogue on the place you travelled this summer: Dyuti Chakraborty
My father had planned to take us to Chibo during the summer vacation. Chibo is a small village near Kalimpong, in Bengal. On the D-day, we reached the railway station at the correct time. We were traveling in a
group. We enjoyed the train journey very much and reached New Jalpaiguri station soon. At the station,
cars were waiting to take us to the resort at Chibo. Along most of the route, the river Teesta accompanied
us with the hills at a distance. The rains added to the beauty of the surroundings. It took almost 3 hours to
reach the resort. The weather was very pleasant at Chibo. The resort had several wooden cottages and we
were asked to stay in one such cottage. Kanchenjunga could be viewed from the balcony of our cottage
and we were lucky to catch a glimpse of it on reaching the resort as we couldn’t see it later because of the
clouds. That evening was spent singing songs and reciting poems.
Next morning we went to visit Delo hill where some of our group members decided to paraglide. Next we
visited the Gorkha guest house where we enjoyed horse-riding. After lunch, we visited the Orchid House
which had different types of cacti on display. A visit to the golf course left us awed at the beauty of the
place. Our last visit was to a monastery, which was located in a secluded part of the town.
We visited Sillery Gaon the next day.. Sillery Gaon is a small village near Kalimpong. From there, we
trekked for twenty minutes and reached Ramitey View Point. The View Point offers a breathtaking view of
the various bends of the Teesta river along with Kanchenjunga at the back. The evening was spent shopping in Kalimpong.
