How Ayan became an Acha Bacha
Ayan was arguing with his parents. The
fight was an everyday affair and followed
a similar pattern. Ayan shouted angrily, “I
don’t want to eat this boring stuff day
after day. I hate it! Same old dal,
vegetables, chapattis and rice.” Ayan’s
mother’s tried to persuade him, but to no
avail.
Then suddenly, his dad screamed, “ Ayan,
you are spoilt brat. I am tired of your
tantrums. Yesterday, we took you out for a
pizza and ice-cream treat. In fact, every
week we go to a restaurant of your choice.
And no, your mom does not cook the same old dal rice everyday. She takes so much pain to cook
interesting and nutritious food for you, but all you want to eat is junk food. You never finish your
tiffin. Why don’t you ever listen to us? I am warning you for the last time: change your habits
otherwise I will take strict action.”
Ayan was reduced to tears. He ran back to his room and shut the door. Flinging himself on the bed,
he thought, “Why don’t they ever understand me? Why don’t they let me do what I want? Shivam
and Farhad’s parents never scold them about anything. They daily eat the canteen food, and
afterwards, buy the icy gola from the thela outside the school gate. Life is soooooo unfair!”
Tired of sobbing, he opened the pages of ‘Fantasy Land’—a book gifted to him by his aunt from
London. Ayan simply loved its colorful images, and shiny, soft pages. It transported him to a different
3
world--away from parents—where everything was so amazing.
As he was flipping through the pages, he saw a picture of a magnificent bungalow in the last
chapter. The unique feature of the house was its garden. It had big, bright flowers, beautiful
butterflies, and fountains at every corner.
But the fountains were no ordinary fountains. Each one consisted of tasty foodstuff. The first one
constantly churned out chocolate, the other overflowed with cola. The third one was brimming with
burgers. There were countless fountains with all the yummy food one could think of.
Ayan wished he could be a part of this wonderland. Life would be so much fun. He imagined himself
surrounded by unlimited donuts, French fries, pastas and ice-creams.
