March 28th, 2015 THE YOUNG CHRONICLE For 9-10 Year Olds or 4-5th Graders 126 YEARS OF THE EIFFEL Rambo and Pranks love the Eiffel Tower, and want to go and visit it soon. When they heard that the Eiffel had completed 126 years, they decided to learn more about Gustave Eiffel, the person responsible for building it. Gustave was born in Dijon, France. Eiffel isn't his real name; it was adopted fom one of his German ancestors in the 18th century. Gustave studied at the Ecole Centrale des Arts et Manufactures in Paris where he learned chemistry. After working for a few years, Gustave met Charles Nepveu, a specialized contractor in metallic construction. Nepveu provided Eiffel with his first job as a project manager for a railway bridge in France. The young engineer showed his talents. His first great work was the railway bridge of Bordeaux, a building site of which he assumed the direction at twenty six years. A few years later, Gustave decided to start his own Indian Open Winners: Saina Nehwal and Kidambi Srikanth made the nation proud, after a huge loss in Cricket. Both the players clinched their maiden women and men's singles titles at the India Open Super Series badminton tournament. After defeating the former world champion, Ratchanok Intanon from Thailand, Saina became the first Indian women shuttler to achieve world number one ranking. Srikanth, world rank no. 4, had to toil hard to register a thrilling three-game win over sixth seed Viktor Axelsen of Denmark in the men's singles competition at the Siri Fort Sports Complex. company named "Eiffel et Cie." The company won several great orders of construction of buildings with metal frames. He built several bridges and structures across Europe. Gustave Eiffel, is especially known for the Eiffel Tower built between 1887 and 1889. He being one of the most daring architects in the whole world wanted to build a high tower "of more than thousand feet". But they met innumerable technical problems. "The tower quickly became a tourist attraction, a national symbol of France and brought a sense of pride to the people who live there." Did you know that Gustave Eiffel also built the Statue of Liberty? "The Statue of Liberty was a gift from France to the United States. Eiffel's design for the interior structural elements allowed for the statue to become a reality. And now, The Statue shows the friendship that was shared between France and the United States." Eiffel died on December 27, 1923 in Paris. But he is still remembered for the 2 inventions which are renowned across the world. Thought for the Week
