WHY Is Halloween celebrated?
Courage Wins the Nobel Peace Prize, a
Global Award for Peace
Malala Yousafzai, is a very
courageous girl. She won the Nobel
Prize because she spoke against those
who did not want girls to study in the
area she lived in, in Pakistan. She is
only 17 years old and has already won
How did Halloween begin?
Halloween has its origins in the ancient Celtic festival
known as Samhain (pronounced ‘sah-win’). The Celts lived
in Britain and Ireland many many years ago. These Celts
observed the start of the New Year on November 1, All
Souls Day. On All Souls Day, people pray for the souls of
their dead relatives, to rest in peace.
a global award for peace, because she
wanted girls to have a right to study.
She was once shot by some gunmen, who did not like her
courage, while she was boarding her school bus. After the
attack, she became very ill and was sent to England to
recover.
The festival of Samhain is a celebration of the end of the
harvest season in Gaelic culture. The ancient Gaels (a
community within the celts) believed that on October 31,
the boundaries between the worlds of the living and the
dead overlapped and the dead would come back to life and
cause havoc such as sickness or damaged crops.
The festival involved huge bonfires. It is believed that the
fires attracted insects to the area, which attracted bats to
the area. Masks and costumes were worn in an attempt to
mimic the evil spirits or appease them.
Wow! So young and so
courageous! I wish I am
as strong as her, when
I am older.
She then took the fight for sending girls to school, at the
Global level.
She shares her prize with Kailash Satyarthi, who fights
against child labour in India.
Who is Kailash Satyarthi? And Why Did
He Win the Nobel Peace Prize?
Trick-or-treating
Trick-or-treating, is an activity for children on or around
Halloween in which they proceed from house to house in
costumes, asking for treats such as confectionery with the
question, "Trick or treat?" The "trick" part of "trick or treat"
is a threat to play a trick on the homeowner if no treat is
given. The origin of trick-or-treating may have also come
from Celtic tradition. Poor children in Britain and Ireland
went door-to-door on All Hallows Eve and received food in
exchange for the promise of praying for the giver’s dead
relatives on All Saints Day. All Saints Day is celebrated for
good souls who went to heaven, and All Souls Day is
celebrated for all others.
Kailash Satyarthi was a teacher in
Bhopal, before he founded the
Bachpan Bachao Andolan. Andolan
means strike. He was involved with
many Indian and Global
Organisations against Child Labor.
Kailash Satyarthi has also headed
organisations and fought for education for children.
Both these people, Malala and Mr. Kailash Satyarthi, have
worked very closely, to promote education for children, and
help them have a better childhood. That is why they won
the Nobel Peace Prize.
Activity: Talk to your servant and ask her if she has
small children going to school. If they don’t go to school,
you could start teaching them ABCD and Numbers.
