Editorial: India– 68 Years of Independence
India has been free from the British for 68 years, and celebrated its 69th Independence Day. The British had come to
India to trade in spices, and realized that they could conquer
it and rule, because India comprised of many small kingdoms
which were always at war with each other. The British took
advantage of this rivalry,, conquered the entire nation, and
ruled it for 100 years.
It was under Gandhiji’s leadership that the Satyagraha movement and quit India Movement took
place. As part of Satyagraha, Indians stopped using violent means of fighting the British and stuck to
peaceful ways of being on strike. After a lot of pain and revolt, we finally got our freedom, and the Independence day is celebrated to honour those who lost their lives.
Did you know that India Gate has names of all the 70,000 soldiers who lost their lives fighting for the
British, during World War 1, in which Indian soldiers fought on behalf of the British? Read more
about it here.
Saina Becomes Number One
Saina Nehwal lost to Spain’s Carolina Marin in the finals
of World Badminton Championships held in Jakarta. She,
however, won the Silver medal for India.
Nehwal said that she did not give her best as the final
match was more of mental than physical. According to
her, the first game didn’t go well.
The Badminton World Federation Women's Singles 2015 has ranked her as the top player in
the list. She is the first Indian to win a bronze medal in Badminton at the London Olympics
2012. She is also the first Indian to win the World Junior Badminton Championships and the
first Indian to win a Super Series tournament. Currently, she ranks number one.
Saina is aiming to participate and excel in all the super series tournaments in Rio Olympics
slated next year.
